How Do Hispanic-Serving InstitutionsServe Latinx Students? A PanelAnalysis of Institutional Characteristics and 6-Year Graduation Rates

This study builds on the body of research Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and Latinx student outcomes, uses Garcia et al.’s (2019) conceptual framework servingness. Using multiple years data from Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), we examined extent to which HSIs serve students in terms 6-year graduation rates at not-for-profit 4-year institutions. Key findings suggest that average for are lower than non-HSIs. non-HSIs have vastly different institutional characteristics, such as organizational environment experienced by structural capacity institutions respond students’ needs. Moreover, find that, HSIs, neither share nor instructional staff promote rates. The rates, however, positively associated with increased spending research, academic support, structures can needs success, well higher selectivity approximated an offering no remedial courses.
